Whilst running make completion I ran into the following error:

   Compiling ring v0.16.20
error: failed to run custom build command for `ring v0.16.20`

Caused by:

This doesn't happen whilst running cargo build --release

I do have musl-dev installed and also ran rustup target add x86_64-unknown-linux-musl.

What am I missing here?

i'm not sure what's going on here, but it sounds like an issue with ring that isn't related to rbw. you might have better luck filing an issue at https://github.com/briansmith/ring ?

Problem solved, musl-gcc from musl-tools wasn't installed.
