This will be necessary for copy/paste, and will also be necessary to handle wide characters correctly (since the cursor should change size when it's over them). It'll also be useful to have when a scripting interface is implemented.

It may be worth considering "Unicode NFG" invented for Rakudo Perl 6...

Possibly. I'll probably start with just strings for now, but it may be worth looking into.
