verified:
svn checkout http://barchart-udt.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ 
barchart-udt-read-only

works fine in ubuntu 10.04

please try inside eclipse / subversive plugin

yes, it works

this was "behind a HTTP-proxy" issue
no matter what svn-client is used
