That doesn't seem to be working - it doesn't look right in the PDF. Any other suggestions? Katrin

If you look closely the left tick is fatter at the bottom, and the right tick is fatter at the top. On 2 Jul 2014 07:50, "Edward Abraham" edward@dragonfly.co.nz wrote:

Yes, must the left ticks slant the wrong way, style of the font or not.

Glad you are so careful. However ...
Fonts have a 'left quote' and that's the one. Short of changing the font, or redesigning that character to make a new font, we're stuck with it. The slope is somewhat moot ... old tadpole quotes don't really have a slope. The weight at the bottom gives it away.
Of course some of these fonts have options, usually around the shape of numerals, ligatures, etc. It is possible that the quote character has variants within the font.
You will see that when the report is turned into an AEBR the quotes will go back to normal times roman mosquito larvae.

Hi Ed,
Thanks for checking it. Although Palatino and I go way back, the quotation marks really don't work.
Looking forward to seeing the mosquito larvae in due course.

Of course you could just use fewer bunny-ears (i.e. none) and save quote marks for quotations!

Hi
I have investigated this a bit further. It seems that the quote are a Palatino thing. While it is possible to replace the glyphs used, it is tricky,. Don't really want to.
In other news, Ed wonders why you need to use the quotes at all. Are they really necessary ?
In general, I don't think we are going to fix this. If you use the double quotes then it will display the character that Palatino wants to. If you don't like the look, don't use double quotes.

Hi Ed and Finlay,
Thanks for looking into it, I appreciate that it's too difficult to change the look. Yes, double quotation marks are necessary at times, so I am not willing to restrict them to quotations. There is a time and a place for single quotation marks, so you can't just use them instead of the double marks. Having said that, the display problem is the same for single quotation marks, i.e, the slant looks wrong in the PDF.
Let's just live with it for now. There is consolation in knowing that the problem won't be there in AEBRs.
Thanks again, Katrin
