The current state of the source code has a bunch of quality and low hanging perf issues:

[x] is it worth to keep WrappedShard around? It seems like a lot of pain for little gain
[ ] refine the API based on suggestions from @burdges
[ ] avoid all those crazy allocations / use better access patterns
[x] cleanup comments
