Why does a cross couped Or, cantoned 4 plates get parsed as if cross-couped-cantonned is a distinct shape? .. cantoned means surrounded by 4 charges, said charges then needing to be specified. Is there some genetic trace of an early cross charge variation where "cantoned" was syntactically analogous to (e.g.) "bottony" (and thus the cantoned is parsed as part of the charge name, rather than a placement directive/verb) ?
