The most inexpensive module is the ESP8266. It costs ~3 USD (I bought them for 2.69 in 20 qty from USA) and comes in a variety of packages.
I think it is the best option if we want to keep the robot cheap.
And we already have experience using it. I would go with it.

Could it be a nice to have in terms of avoiding the need of a rPI for having wireless communication?
Which module should we use? Is it expensive?
We have to answer these questions for making a decision.
