There are two options, and unfortunately there does not seem to be a way in between:
Support the Android User Certificate Store (Cronet)
Let the user paste a custom ssl certificate to trust (HttpClient)
There does not seem to be a way in between (see also here.
I'm still unsure if the Android User Certificate Store is a proper way to do it, or if it is too complicated (but then again some knowledge is required to set up FF3...). There does not seem to be a nice guide to point people to if they are unsure about how to do it.
