Thanks for reporting. That's a known issue, see https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton/issues/407 (I think it's actually worse in arch compared to ubuntu).
No good solution at this point (your workaround is the only one available at this stage).

I started using chroagh today and created a chroot with XFCE.
Whenever I log out from the chroot, the brightness of the screen is very low, as if it was set to the minimum. A single tap on one of the brightness keys restore it back to the value it had when starting the chroot.
Is it a known issue or limitation? I am not sure what kind of information I can provide to help.
