I get this error when trying to use the matlab prettifier or xcolor packages. I just downloaded the newest release and still have this problem. The error shows up for most lines in the .toc and .lof files.

I encountered the same error when trying to use the xcolor package. @AlexanderBlum: Were you able to resolve the error?

I encountered the same issue. The workaround that works for me is to use an ancient LaTex suite, in my case, the 2017 version. On Overleaf, you could switch from different suites, such as the latest 2022, old 2017, etc. I switched to 2017, and then all errors were gone. Any version later than 2017 triggered the same error. If you use this template offline, e.g., with TexLive on Ubuntu, the legacy TexLive 2017 release should be fine too. However, I didn't test this approach.
