old, but still relevant: http://projects.aljazeera.com/2013/syrias-refugees/
Hadn't seen that, really interesting approach.
Maybe not the best structure for a post, but this is there too - http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/09/refugees-map-country-europe-crisis
Potential resource for journalists reporting on this - http://data.unhcr.org/mediterranean/regional.html
Not strictly the refugee crisis, but this is worth a mention: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/09/14/world/middleeast/syria-war-deaths.html?ref=world&_r=1
I run a Twitter chat on open data & transparency issues every Sat morning from 10-11. Once a month on the 2nd Sat of each month I'm going to focus on a specific topic & invite people to blog about various aspects of the topic. I've set down the asylum seekers & foreign aid as the topics for October 10. I'd like to include the upcoming newsletter. I'm inviting people to blog about data sources etc & linking to existing publications to the resources page on my wiki at http://infoaus.net/projects/index.php/Asylum_seekers
https://source.opennews.org/en-US/learning/connecting-dots/ Jake Harris on data visualization, empathy, and representing people with dots (although about Baghdad)
And here is Hans Rosling https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_QrIapiNOw
this strikes me as a particularly difficult story to cover with data. I'd like to see a survey of how it's been done.
