Bug: Plugin writes files to `src` directory #8

Generally, these metadata files shouldn't be checked-in, instead they should only be generated in the dist directory.

Questions:

Can we always assume the dist directory is the right place to generate these files?
- probably not - babel lets users config that - also don't think that is exposed to the plugins
- most likely we'll want to expose an option for this
Can we always assume the directory exists before trying to write to it?
- probably not?
What happens when we try to write to a file that already exists?
