Tried coming up with my own solution until I got frustrated and lo and behold a library already exists lmao. The library adds a button that defaults to the bottom right, which allows you to toggle between light and dark modes. It also checks for prefers-color-scheme, plus it sets a flag in localStorage, so all that's cared for.
