This is my attempt at refactoring the host allocation stuff avoiding gotos. It hasn't even been compile tested let alone run tested.

It's here 'cos I woke up with it in my head and needed to get it out!

DO NOT MERGE WITHOUT CASTING AWAKE EYES OVER IT!
