The Dashboard page needs to be redesigned a bit. The basic design principle to achieve is that a user does not want to simultaneously look at adding data streams and looking at the results of his data. Instead, it should be one or the other and the user should be able to switch focus.
Here's one idea:
If a user has no streams connected, the page should encourage a user to connect a stream and tell him that he has no streams connected. If, on the other hand, the user has streams are connected, the left panel should be collapsed into a bright button that says "Add stream". When that is clicked the left panel can be opened to take over the screen, though not as a modal, since the buttons from that panel will be modals.
