Per Discussions #2316, this issue is to create an ability within MET to read ice area data and calculate the real area (not a count of grid points or grid boxes) of each dataset (forecast and observation).
Of particular interest are two items:
Ability to calculate actual area of ice for both forecast and observation datasets and back out the area that is not in common (symmetric difference)
A user setting that allows control of the critical level of ice for a given area. Levels of >0/15/40/80% are of interest. More information should be gathered on how this is measured (80% of model area? 80% of user-specified mask? etc.)
This issue is dependent on several tripolar reading issues, which will need to be completed before the datasets containing Integrated Ice Extent can be read/computed.
Acceptance Testing
@rgrumbine can provide the appropriate datasets for testing this functionality.
