request/response protos: inline doc on the proto for non-obvious fields

Not clear on which fields you are talking about here^ @jzacsh

just keeping this thread updated: harshil and I've been chatting since last reply and I'm getting three branches of code to him that he can use (two PRs, one branch). All slated to land and fully unblock this PR today.
