Change request: Posting order, initial speed on EDGE/GPRS and icon #52

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

Hi,

... I have iNewsGroup 1.0.6 and love it. There are a few things that bug
me, tho:

1. When launching on a GPRS/EDGE connection, it takes ages to refresh the
group list even with only five groups selected for reading. I can't
interrupt this connect/refresh sequence other than by holding the home
button for some 5 seconds or so. Holding the iPhone next to my speakers
reveals that there is constant communication going on. So it *is* doing
something. Is there at least a way to interrupt it if communication is too
long other than holding the home button for at least 5 seconds? It ignores
the "Quit" button during that time too.

2. Can you add a preference that allows changing the posting order to
display unread or newest messages in a group first? This would allow for
faster reading the really new stuff in high-volume groups? And/or...

3. Can you add a preference that allows to hide or show all read messages?

4. This is cosmetics only: Can you change the icon to be more iPhone style,
i.e. put it on a square glass plate with round corners? That'd make the
screen appear less cluttered.

My iPhone is 16GB/1.1.4/ziphoned

This newsreader is great otherwise. Thanks very much for it. :-)

Cheers,

Paul

Regarding the initial speed, I'm working on it. Development has been in a
different
direction because of the new SDK but I hope to have something going :-).

See issue #46 ( http://code.google.com/p/inewsgroup/issues/detail?id=46 ) for an
issue I created as a suggested solution to this problem. Seems to be what
you're
suggesting as well, right? I'll push that forward in my list of things to take
care of.

Both those preferences shouldn't be too hard to implement. Regarding the hide
unread, if you read an article would the article disappear from the listing
immediately? You have an idea how you'd like that to work? I can see it
appealing
to, while viewing a group, be able to go back to an article, particularly
because it
might make threads a bit weird.

Preference for sorting shouldn't be an issue, I'll look into making that.

Regarding the icon, it's something from the free tango image library, I have
little
graphical talent. Do you, or do you know someone who does? I'd be happy to
improve
the icon, that's just not my cup of tea so to speak.

Get back to me and I'll split this into a few issues. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Will,

... sorry for the late answer. I answer emails more often than forums. So, if
you
want quick replys, email me at paul.foerster at gmail.

Thanks for pointing to issue #46.

Hiding read messages immediately is not necessary. Hiding them when the message
list
is reloaded by reentering the group is perfectly fine, especially as it allows
to go
back to a message in a thread one has read a second before.

As for the icon, I'm not a graphics wizard either, I just too the weather icon's
background and added a newspaper icon to it that I found on the net (Google
image
search). ;-) Have a look at it. If you like it, maybe use that. Of course, for
consistency reasons, you should alter your startup screen too. ;-)

I don't know if the icon has the right size. I don't know the size
specifications for
iPhone icons.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Will,

... ok, created another icon based on your original image. Hope you like either
the
first or this one.

Cheers,

Paul

I intend on (eventually) incorporating points 2 and 3 into the 2.x release. 1
as
well, as is possible... but the behavior overall is much more
useful/appropriate.

Regarding the icon, I'll be using that in 2.x release, thank you very much! :)

No date yet on 2.0 release, feel free to subscribe to issue #56 to be notified
of the
release. Progress is being made, but slowly....
