empty (use tmp folder) FILE_CACHE_DIRECTORY in timthumconfig.php

When specifying 

$FILE_CACHE_DIRECTORY = ''; 

In timthumbconfig.php the value within timthumb.php still seems to be taken 
into account (maybe because this one is empty / undefined)

Please advise if i am doing something wrong. 

timthumbconfig.php : 

<?php

$FILE_CACHE_DIRECTORY = '';

$ALLOWED_SITES = array (
        'site1.com',
        'site2.com',
);

?>

It's a PHP constant, not a variable, thus you need to define it in 
timthumb-config.php as:

define ('FILE_CACHE_DIRECTORY', '');
