Oswald Font Styles Only Show Halfway #152

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. View font style Book or Bold on Google web fonts directory
2. Or, use font api style Book or Bold on website,
3. And only half the font shows up

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expected to see the entire font, but it only showed halfway down the letters. 
 The letters are cut off horizontally. 

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Windows 7 x64

Please provide any additional information below.
Happens when viewing font on the directory or when I use it on a website.

Do you have Oswald installed on the machine with the issue? That is probably 
causing the the problem. If Oswald isn't installed, it displays normally. Must 
be a conflict between Google's version and the version installed on your local 
machine.

My solution would be to install @font-face manually from somewhere like:
http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/oswald

Confirmed, uninstalling the Oswald font from the machine with Windows 7 x64 
resolves the problem of the half font in Chrome browser.

Does this issue (between fonts installed on Windows 7 x64 and displaying Google 
fonts in Chrome browser) occur for other any other fonts?

I don't want to have to remove the font from my machine as I need the font 
installed when designing (and editing) website designs.

To display the font correctly in all browsers, I have had to revert to using 
font-face but I would rather use Google web fonts.

I recently bought a Wordpress theme and I thought that it was an issue with the 
theme, but it ended up just being Oswald. Quite strange. Thanks for the 
advice!!

For me other fonts (i.e. 'Droid Sans') are working properly, but Oswald isn't.

Use or add - font-weight:normal;
It is working fine at my end after applying this.

font-weight: normal? But what if you have different font-weights? Like 
400,700,800 etc.

I need a different font weight. Is there a fix for this that doesn't involve 
reverting to font-weight normal?

Also: I tested font weight normal, and it does not work for all parts of the 
font family (e.g. Oswald Light). Is there another fix for this?

I see this on Windows 7, Chrome and Firefox browser but not in IE9. In IE9, all 
three versions of the Oswald font - book, normal, bold - render correctly. In 
FF and Chrome, book and bold are sliced horizontally, losing the bottom half.

This doesn't happen for all fonts. I have plenty of others, such as Source Sans 
and Open Sans installed on my PC but they render fine when I'm viewing them on 
a webpage. So far it's only Oswald I've noticed that does this.

The reason this is set to 'wontfix' sit that its a problem of having the fonts 
installed in the operating system. 

Uninstalling the Oswald font from the machine will resolve the issue.

By the way, "font-weight: normal" is equal to "font-weight: 400" - if you try 
for light, 'font-weight: 300' and for bold, 'font-weight: 700' that may help.

Fonts are supposed to be able to be installed in the OS, by both website 
designer AND website viewers. So basically, what you're saying is that as a 
designer, I am faced with a browser environment that is not conducive to 
viewers who may have this font installed. I am also put in the position that I 
cannot incorporate the font into graphic elements to complement my website. All 
this means that I cannot design for Chrome. Sounds pretty unfriendly to your 
customers. 

Font weights from 100-900 have been tested and do not work to resolve the issue.

same issue, different google font 'Antic Slab' not working with or without 
bold. Half of the text shows in a textbox. Seems to have started after the IE10 
push.

This glitch is driving me crazy.  I agree completely with post #17.  As a 
designer (or other designers) who will need to incorporate the font-style into 
other materials & pre-rendered graphics, websites fail to load correctly.

I can confirm that setting a font-weight fixes the glitch in webkit browsers.

Maybe someone could create an Oswald2-regular, -bold etc. version? Developers 
can use the Oswald2 in their environment. I've tried to just be lazy and hex 
edit the font but I'm not that familiar with OTF so it was a failure to insert 
a 2 where the dash is in the font file.

Same here. After installing Oswald, it no longer appears properly in Chrome. 
Windows 7. Latest Chrome build. Don't want to uninstall the font to have it 
work in the browser.

I can echo mj4whis comment, using a font-weight of 600 does fix it, however any 
higher than that it gets cut in half again. I find this really disappointing, I 
constantly have problems with chrome and fonts. Out of all the browsers I've 
tested oswald in it is rendered the most poorly in chrome.

There's a simple CSS fix for this, guys.

Here's the normal @font-face for Oswald:
@font-face {
  font-family: 'Oswald';
  font-style: normal;
  font-weight: 400;
  src: local('Oswald Regular'), local('Oswald-Regular'), url(http://themes.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/oswald/v7/-g5pDUSRgvxvOl5u-a_WHw.woff) format('woff');
}

Since the issue is with the local font, all you have to do is use the 
following, slightly altered @font-face code:

@font-face {
  font-family: 'Oswald';
  font-style: normal;
  font-weight: 400;
  src: url(http://themes.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/oswald/v7/-g5pDUSRgvxvOl5u-a_WHw.woff) format('woff');
}

Of course, adjust to your needs (e.g. additional font weights)

I found a solution that works for me. (OS WIN7-64Bit)
- Remove Oswald Font (otf-Files)
- Download Oswald (ttf-Files) from here 
http://www.1001fonts.com/oswald-font.html
- Install Font and you're done!

Re: comment #34... that may work for you individually, but it won't work for 
the other people out there who have the font loaded on their local machine, 
aren't aware of the overall issue, and see your website messed up on Chrome. 

Google still owes us a fix for this issue. It is not strictly a local issue, 
since it is not possible for me to control who out there has downloaded this 
font to their own machine before they view my website.

I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this. I'm hoping that it's fixed 
soon because I need the font on my machine to place it in pictures for my 
website.

This is a local SRC conflict; replace @import with the equivalent @font-face 
from the webfont CSS you are otherwise using, and remove the local src 
references. This will work across all versoins.

#38 - again, with the local fix for a global issue. Not a solution for any of 
us. I cannot tell my audience not to use Chrome or not to download this font. 
IE and Firefox don't have this issue. Why can't Chrome get its act together and 
fix it?

I had this issue with a Wordpress theme from last year and just re-encountered 
it all over again after downloading oswald to the local machine! Surprised to 
see this issue is still not fixed :(

So glad to join this "fun" group experiencing this "fun" issue. I am actually 
relieved that only those with this font installed on Win x64 are seeing this 
problem.

I think you'll find those sites all utilise the 400 weight version, which seems 
to be the only weight (of the three on google fonts) that displays correctly.
