There is a new feature on Yosemite that whenever an app sets the system wide default browser the system will confirm that choice. I've worked around that by allowing ControlPlane to open URLs and then pass them to the browser you've picked. You can test this by downloading http://www.controlplaneapp.com/download/CI and let me know how it works for you. If you install this version you won't be notified of updated releases so I recommend you run it directly from the disk image to test. I'll be releasing an update soon that will include this fix if you works for you.
This is a very creative way of solving this problem -- kudos! It works exactly as you indicate. I look forward to this being included in your next release.
I get the error message "Couldn't set default browser '%@'! when ControlPlane attempts to set my default browser. I get this same error if setting Chrome or Safari as default. I also get a popup from OS X.
This is under Yosemite 10.10.
