update read and getattr so we can start navigating/display other changes are just linter

That's great - thanks for the PR! I wasn't expecting to have users/pull-requests early on in the project but it's very welcome. I will have a look at how these can be merged/incorporated with some other changes I'm making and see if I can merge this.

I like it - I'm just going to merge and fix the test/PEP8 stuff in another branch as I can't write to your master branch and want to merge it to carry on working on it soon.
