I don't personally have a GPU fan either. This patch was written by someone on the Reddit; I was just submitting it here to hopefully get it included upstream.
I can give your patches a test in the next few days and report back.
I didn't think this would necessarily be merged as-is, but instead used as a starting point for you since you know the code best.

This is a direct patch from the above author. Feel free to modify it as you see fit. I've already tested this and it does fix the crash.
This has been (hopefully temporarily) patched in the Archlinux package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/plasma5-applets-fanspeed-monitor-git
