CIRCLE OF BEES

Ecology & Folk Art for California artists

Seeking artist with an ethics or interest in sub/urban ecology and a passion to contribute to a vision of cities that are less like toxic mall parking lot and more like garden, farm, orchard, forest, meadow, and wild natural place. We are commissioning art to adorn 100 swarm capture hives to deployed in trees and rooftops around our prototype city of Davis CA. Artist may not necessarily be located in Davis to apply.

Circle of Bees, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) organized for artistic, educational, and scientific pursuit. The following projects fall under our current mission scope ...

https://www.circleofbees.com/mission/#100hivesdavis Sub/Urban Hive Chimes Circle of Bees’ “Hive Chimes” is sub/urban beekeeping technology that will deepen the data collection capacity of our backyard network and make keeping a colony a more engaging experience for our hosts. A Hive Chime is a wirelessly connected bee-counter that sits over a hive entrance and simply ticks each bee that comes in and out, and transmits that information in real time to our web server. Collected data will available in real-time for both human and algorithmic monitoring. Issues like illness, swarming, and changes in habits through the season will be available via web and smartphone. Aggregate data produced by many Hive Chimes over time will provide us a deep resource for research. We intend to make our hive network data into a public API [define API], accessible to scientists and researchers who can help us to tell the story of city bees. Additionally, we plan to thread Hive Chimes data through a musical artificial-intelligence algorithm capable of converting the ebbs and flows of daily hive traffic into a gentle audible chime for the home: a pleasing honeybee-music that allows our hosts a deeper understanding and connection to their honey-bee superorganism guest. If you would like to contribute to making the Hive Chimes a reality please give to the Circle of Bees Inc here. If you are interested in hearing more about our Hive Chimes please join the Circle of Bees Inc here.

Beeautiful Future! Circle of Bees’ long- term vision of a sustainable future is cities that look less like parking lots and more like gardens, farms, orchards, meadows, and forests, all connected by wild, natural spaces. That change starts in our own backyards with ecological adventures intensified through a high tech filter. We predict that old tech like beekeeping and gardening, combined with new data and interface systems, will allow local ecology to capture imaginations tomorrow with the intensity that video games and TV do today. A hybrid of aesthetic, technical, and social concerns will form a new movement in art based on education in natural processes, organisms, and materials. We believe that social change always follows artistic movements with ecological roots of this kind. Circle of Bees mission is to present keeping bees and looking after pollinators as an inclusive and equitably adventure with real public benefit. Our challenges are a reluctant public, a merciless, commercially driven status-quo, and the imperative to enact huge change cultural production in a only short period of time. We most definitely need your help. Give the Circle of Bees, Inc. here. Join Circle of Bees, Inc. here.

_THE INSIDE/OUT Installation Proposal for International artists_

EXHIBITION PROPOSAL

The InsideOut is an alternative art space located on 21st and I in midtown Sacramento. Consisting of three bay windows, the space is an extension of a ground floor apartment at the Flop Haus, a structural zeitgeist in the community. Since the entire space is viewed from the street, site-specific installations and projects have the potential to be viewed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The InsideOut promotes artistic collaboration, exploration and experimentation across a large spectrum of the art community.

Since The InsideOut is a not for profit art space, the focus will be on work that has no commercial viability. Artists retain all rights to their work and will receive an opportunity to experiment across disciplines, media, and personal boundaries in order to grow artistically and professionally. On the other hand, the public and greater community will have the chance to engage with art that takes risks, that looks at art for its possibilities not its conventions. Please check out previous projects here: www.the-insideout.org
