Mapeo: p2p collaborative mapping #8

Open hackergrrl opened 5 years ago

hackergrrl commented 5 years ago

Mapeo is a desktop and mobile app for offline & online peer-to-peer collaborative mapping. It is currently being used in multiple indigenous communities in {Peru,Guyana,Ecuador} for mapping territory (land rights) and monitoring ecological threats (environmental monitoring).

Mapeo is still pretty specialized for use with our (Digital Democracy's) partners, so it would need some amount of tweaks to work well out-of-the-box on the dweb mesh net.

I've talked with (@bnewbold) Bryan Newbold, an avid biker, about using Mapeo to create offline maps of the Farm's surrounding bike trails. What would be needed to apply Mapeo to something like that?

hackergrrl commented 5 years ago

For offline or mesh-only use, the big things would be:

  1. preloading offline satellite imagery for the idea (not required, but makes the mapping experience a lot nicer than a black background)
  2. preloading presets for the type of mapping being done (e.g. OpenStreetMap uses generally urban presets, whereas Dd's partners in the jungle would be mapping very different things).

One could potentially create a custom build explicitly for the event, with the imagery and presets already loaded.

@noffle any plans on having Mapeo here? Would be nice if you and/or @karissa can talk about experience in mapping territory and monitoring ecological threats.
