My theoretical interests lie in the areas of linguistic typology and discourse, with an eye towards diachronic explanation and functionalist theory. I aim to understand the principles that underlie linguistic structure as it emerges from the social, cognitive, and discourse-oriented influences on language iterated over time. I approach this topic by applying corpus-based methods to documentary corpora of a diverse set of languages, whether these are corpora I have compiled through my own fieldwork, or acquired from other researchers. My research has a strong focus on data management and corpus linguistics for the purpose of empirical accountability, and to that end I have been working to develop data formats and browser-based tools for managing linguistic corpora, texts, and lexicons on the web.
