Shortening of the URL [algo:- pre determined million set]; listing down strategies

• [ ] a worker which is running with populating pre-generated unique strings and once the request comes for write should be picked & assigned.
• [ ] system is read heavy and not write heavy!!
• [ ] some algo to generate unique string and in case of collision, re-enter!! [but there can be cases where collision occurs, how to resolve collision faster?]
• [ ] Any other masking algo like md5 which can mask the whole URL to a unique string?
• [ ] if unique stirng is of len 3-4, then it's going to be exhausted, what's the strategy for clean up?
