Older PHP version with RefNotes plugin results in HTML 324 error ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE #24

*STEPS TO REPRODUCE*
1. Refnotes plugin is enabled
2. Opening a page that contains references. Other pages (that do not use refnotes plugin
features) open correctly.

*VERSIONS*
* RefNotes:
  http://dwp-forge.googlecode.com/files/refnotes-2012-07-15.zip
* DokuWiki:
  2012-10-13 "Adora Belle"
* Apache Server
  Apache 2.2
* PHP
  PHP 5.1.6

The old PHP version seems to be the problem. This should be part of plugin requirements.
The site https://www.dokuwiki.org/plugin:refnotes does not mention this.

How did you figure out about the version? Did you try other PHP versions on your setup?
Which ones worked?

We tried with PHP 5.3 and that worked...
