I'm surprised it's taken them this long to make this a "_Feature_" ... Been thinking about this for a while ... do we want to censor people from talking about the content? Or is it just to prevent me-too or worse trolling responses?

Anecdotally, I've seen even professional bloggers have certain posts where they don't allow comments or close comments after a certain period of time (particularly relevant for giveaways but sometimes for older posts that are constantly trolled).

It's very much an anti-trolling mechanism and although we don't need to encourage it, I think there are valid reasons for including it.

We just need a (_much_) _better_ way of managing comments... New people should have to level-up in the ecosystem in order to post comments with links. That generally avoids spam. And people who troll should be punished or banned. There are modules dedicated to fighting spam on the major CMSs:
