All the Colours! #139

We need to sort out our colour scheme because :yellow_heart: :blue_heart: colours are beautiful  :green_heart:.

For now we need even just a starter colour scheme. We both like green so that's a good place to start :+1:

nelsonic commented 9 years ago

@iteles I agree 100% we need to decide on colors. We used: http://flatuicolors.com/ on our last project, but happy to go more "custom"...

iteles commented 9 years ago

I had originally put together a few swatches that started with:

Like (Y). Have you recently had a look at: http://www.google.com/design/spec/style/color.html ?

bold hues juxtaposed with muted environments, deep shadows, and bright highlights.

I'd like to see a list of what each color means to us so we don't just pick random colors "just cause they are pretty..."

There are some interesting studies that show that perceptions of colours are largely based on their experiences rather than just on the colour themselves, which makes a lot more sense to me.

My personal theory is that the combination of colours must be evaluated as opposed to the individual colours.

Having said this, colours have been proven to have a correlation with people's perceptions of a brand's personality so they are of course important. The broad consensus on the above is that green inspires calm and growth and blue inspires trust.

Lastly, men also tend to prefer brighter colours and women softer ones.

@iteles have you seen this: http://materializecss.com/ ?

iteles commented 9 years ago

@nelsonic So. Thoughts on the colour scheme?

[As an aside, materializecss is pretty cool - though they seem to have quite a few open issues - and I'm tempted to take a weekend away from dwyl to get the landim site done - the work is practically done for me already]

nelsonic commented 9 years ago

Yeah, it was always going to be blue/green. the question is: should we use a hue of red/pink for the inside of the heart...? or just keep it a single color?

iteles commented 9 years ago

Absolutely a single colour (I really don't think any hues would look simple or elegant on the heart). The question for me is more around which tones of blues and greens!

nelsonic commented 9 years ago

So glad you're on the case. I would never know what tone of blue/green to select. :+1:

iteles commented 9 years ago

Sarcasm isn't a good look for you. :smirk:

nelsonic commented 5 years ago

For the record, my statement wasn't sarcasm. I genuinely haven't dedicated enough time to color theory to know what colors are "good"; I just go with what LGTM ... which is not "scientific" at all.

Google did an A-B Test of link color where they tested 40 variants in order to decide based on data: https://gigaom.com/2009/07/09/when-it-comes-to-links-color-matters In the short term we won't have the usage volume to run experiments like Google does. And in the medium term, I would prefer to make the interface user-customisable with "themes" allowing people to personalise the App to the exact colors they prefer to see.

So ... I propose we use a handful of colors as our scheme (hence linking to flatuicolors.com above) Whereby the App feels nice and we don't need to spend too much time on color selection/debate. Once we have a "critical mass" of people using the App we can dive into personalisation with themes.

I think it can be a really good visual cue to use different colors for meaning/emphasis e.g: #218
