I think this deserves some quick testing but although the bugs are still being ironed out of Material icons, it may be worth switching to them:

File size: Material Icons are 40kb, much smaller than font awesome
Accessibility: I need to investigate how ligatures work with screen readers but I suspect they will work better than font awesome's lack of screen reader friendliness.
