I guess they achieved their critical mass and need to make money ... to repay "Fly Ventures" ... https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/gitbook/company_financials

We are not writing a book to "make money" by selling it. Our minimum price on LeanPub is set to $0.00 ("Free") i.e. 100% Accessible Technical Learning to everyone and "Risk Free".
If anyone feels like they got value out of reading (and/or watching!) the content and can afford pay a fee to help cover LeanPub's service (processing the PDF/ePub/Kindle versions and updating all existing readers that a new release has been published!) Please go for it, we totally support what LeanPub are doing for sharing knowledge!
Why publish with LeanPub?
Imagine you want to share your (written) content with as many people as possible and in as many formats so it's portable and they can "take it with them anywhere" ...
We want to share our ("_work-in-progress_") draft with "early addopters" who can then give feedback and help improve the content
while
collaboratively writing it...Also, we really like the LeanPub manifesto: https://leanpub.com/manifesto
Are there alternatives...?
GitBook: https://github.com/GitbookIO/gitbook & https://www.gitbook.com/about We've used GitBook a few times and think it's really good! We just prefer the Tools and out-of-the-box analytics available in LeanPub...
Do we have to chose between LeanPub and GitBook?
Can we use both services...? What are the costs/benefits negatives/advantages?
