Mattress Research #23

nelsonic commented 7 months ago

Over the years I/we have slept on many different mattresses including Casper, Simba, SilentNight, Emma and several IKEA models. So far the best we've found are an IKEA Matrand and Emma mattress. We returned our Simba. 👎 We are only interested in Mattresses that are made from Memory Foam or Latex because they are objectively better.

Matrand is still available in the US: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/matrand-memory-foam-mattress-firm-white-00272406/

image

But discontinued in PT: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/search/?q=matrand

image

There are quite a few options form IKEA in PT in the size we want: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/search/?q=mattress%2090x200

image

Yes, the Bunk Bed Frame in the search results is covered by our research: https://github.com/dwyl/bunk-bed/issues/1#issuecomment-1845471391

If we filter the results for the criteria:

We are left with the following 2 options: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/cat/foam-latex-mattresses-24823/?filters=f-firmness%3A47473%2Cf-typed-reference-measurement%3A90x200%20cm_mattresses

image

The ÅFJÄLL and is 12 cm thick and €89: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/afjaell-foam-mattress-medium-firm-white-40568646/

image

Personally I find it very difficult to believe that this is even minimally comfortable.

By contrast the ÅKREHAMN is 20 cm thick and €259: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/akrehamn-foam-mattress-medium-firm-white-40481672/

image

ÄNGSKORN are the mattress protectors we use on our IKEA mattresses €39 https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/aengskorn-mattress-protector-90461997/

image

For reference the Emma One with Protector in 200cm x 90cm is currently available for €267,62

image

The Emma Original which is 25cm thick with protective cover is currently €339 https://www.colchaoemma.pt/emma-original-capa-protetora/

The protective cover from Emma is €74: https://www.colchaoemma.pt/capa-protetora/

@iteles what are your thoughts on mattresses? Which company is more likely to give us a volume discount if we buy 30 units? 💭

The reason I'm opening this issue now is to figure out what height of mattress I'm designing the bed for. I'm going to assume 20cm but plan for up to 25cm to accomodate a range.

nelsonic commented 6 months ago

This is confirmation of my request for volume discount:

Sent 3 days ago (during the business week). But still no reply. @iteles either of us can follow-up. Not urgent. But at some point would be good to know which mattress we're going to standardise on. 👌

iteles commented 6 months ago

Mattresses seem unfathomably expensive 🙈

I would also like to look into a couple of Portuguese companies - if at all possible it would be good to keep this local. I will make this search my first priority tomorrow, just so we have a well-rounded idea of the current market.

Other than that I would likely skip the 'big name brands' like Emma because although I'm quite happy with our Emma mattress, I wouldn't say it's value for money. It's definitely overpriced and they know it which is why they pump so much money into marketing 🙄

nelsonic commented 6 months ago

@iteles yes, Emma is definitely over-priced. But it's instantly-recognisable. Precisely because of their absurd marketing spend. 🙃 Happy to consider a PT supplier, ideally manufacturer. But if it's just a PT brand and made-in-China, not much advantage ...

nelsonic commented 1 month ago

@iteles given that 👦 is using one of the single mattresses now, I'm going to take a quick trip to IKEA in the next couple of days and visit "bargain corner" to see if they have any mattresses that are functionally fine but in need of TLC. if the discount warrants the work required to spruce them up, I will buy 2 for use in our prototype bunk bed.

If there are none in bargains, I will buy new ones, which saves time but burns cash. 💸

Never got a reply from Emma ⬆️ and have zero hope of a volume discount. 🙃

Can we go there for dinner on Friday (we have commitments today and Thursday)? Or are you thinking you need to go with the van because if they're in the bargain corner then they'll be unrolled and won't fit in our boot?

nelsonic commented 1 month ago

The Van is currently being used by M ... I'd need to request that it be returned ... 🙄 (fun having to request my own car be returned ... but whatevs) So I would take the T and just put down the rear seats like I've done other times. This would be me taking a lightning trip by myself or with 2️⃣ in the front. But going as a Fam would require two cars for sure. Still doable if you want to roll biz + fam into the trip. I was thinking going and being back in less than 30 mins just to checkout bargains and if not grab from the isles and blitz it back. LMK what you decide.

iteles commented 1 month ago

Sure, feel free to head out there for a quick trip, unless you want me to go as I'll be nearby at the forest.

Please pick up one of these skimmers whilst there: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/ikea-365-hjaelte-deep-fry-skimmer-stainless-steel-black-60149461/

nelsonic commented 1 month ago

@iteles I don't think it's reasonable for you to drag 1️⃣ to IKEA on your way back from the Forest ... ⏳ Unless you plan to have lunch there. And we know what happened to the car door last time you did that ... 💸 🔥

I will head there with the Van on Friday, Check the Bargains section for single mattresses - with a tape measure! If there are any foam (we definitely don't want anything with springs as they are noisy, uncomfortable and don't last long!) bring them. If not, will buy two of the ÅFJÄLL memory foam mattresses.

I was almost tempted to axsk you to go past IKEA ... However ... having done the "math" we're going to need more beds too ... 🙃 At least until we build the Bunk Bed Prototype ... #20 So taking the Van is a must.

iteles commented 1 month ago

I was offering to try and go in the 45 mins (when I'm lucky) I get whilst A is at the forest and I'm in the car, obviously wouldn't drag A around, though he would LOVE a solo lunch with mama.

And it's not fair at All to be like 'we all know what happened last time' - there's no correlation between going there for lunch and what happened to the car.

We have one double bed and two single bed frames. Will we need more than that in the immediate future?

iteles commented 1 month ago

@nelsonic We ended up getting a mattress at JSYK which was on 'permanent promotion' for €200 and I really enjoyed sitting on, seemed great! We should, by the end of June, be able to get an additional 6% off with their B2B program.

However, do we still want to get one of the €89 mattresses to try out? Or go in store to see if it's good or not? I'm keen as it would be a more sustainable option given these mattresses will suffer unforeseen issues and have to be replaced I'm sure 🙃

Sometimes the cheaper ones are not worse than the more expensive ones !

nelsonic commented 1 month ago

Indeed, we bought the 90x200 GOLD F85 Memory Foam mattress from JYSK: https://jysk.pt/quarto/colchoes/colchoes-de-espuma/colchao-espuma-90x200-gold-f85-branco-wellpur image

Best place to get spec/info is the UK site: https://jysk.co.uk/bedroom/mattresses/foam-mattresses/foam-mattress-gold-f85-wellpur-single image

They have it on a similar 50% Promo in the UK for £250: image

At 22cm Height it's thicker than the similar 20cm from IKEA. This is good for added comfort, but bad for taking up more vertical space in a bunk bed ... 💭

In terms of "trying out" the €89 IKEA ÅFJÄLL noted in the OP ... I think really need to A-B test to see the level of comfort and sleep quality. 💭
