The reason for custom-making bunk beds from scratch is simple: control over exact design + features. ๐
But custom-making anything incurs additional cost. ๐ฐ ๐
10 Costs in Descending Order
1. Time! โ
The highest cost by far is the Time to design & build the bunk bed. โณ ๐ธ ๐ฅ
Not only the time to build but the Opportunity Cost of not doing something else. ๐ฌ
But I feel that this is a good investment of my time and will benefit many other people in the future. ๐ค
Once I've built the first couple of prototypes, I will be keeping track of how much time it takes to build a bunk from raw material to finished so that I have an idea how long it will take to build all of them. ๐ญ
Right now I'm budgeting ~10 days to build the first prototype.
Once all the dimensions & features are finalised I think we can get it down to 2 days.
2. Mattress ๐๏ธ โฌ500
We intend to buy IKEA Mattresses for the simple reason that they have consistent quality and are easy to replace when needed.
I wouldn't mind buying Emma mattresses if they were price-competitive.
Please see dedicated/separate issue: https://github.com/dwyl/bunk-bed/issues/23 ๐
3. Plywood ๐ฒ โฌ200
In terms of materials the Plywood is the highest cost simply because of area covered and cost per square meter!
4. Mild Steel ๐ฉ โฌ150
Believe it or not, mild steel is cheaper per meter than wood right now!! ๐ฎ
This is an extract from a recent order from our local Metal supplier
5. Bed Linen ๐งบ โฌ80
Ref: #4
6. Duvet โฌ โฌ70
No major research required here. Just Getting IKEA Single's see:
The beds themselves will not be on castors, they will weigh far too much (~400kg with mattresses and people)
and could become unstable. Instead they will be "installed" in the specific spot in the room and only move for cleaning.
What will be on castors is the drawers under the bed for luggage storage: https://github.com/dwyl/bunk-bed/issues/19
Each bed will have two drawers so that each person can have one.
Each drawer will have 4 castors.
