Measured the available space and the 3 sizes of glass we have:
Made a prototype using 10mm plywood:
QA inspection:
That integrated white pot for the herbs 🌿 is an IKEA MUSKOT:
Just checked and they were discontinued… 🤦♂️ https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/search/?q=Muskot
I can’t help but think that some easily offended person complained about the product including the word “Musk” in it … 💭
lame. Need to head back to the store to see if there is an alternative product that will work before I cut the holes out of the shelves. What an unnecessary waste of time! 🤦♂️
Confirmed by searching for the product SKU (8 digit code):
Why IKEA?! WHY?! 😢 What was wrong with this vase?! 🤷♂️
They killed a perfectly good item so they could release a worse but more expensive one: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/ambraroenn-plant-pot-in-outdoor-white-40559492/
This is only 15cm white one they sell now and I can’t say I like it … and I don’t really feel like spending €70 buying 7 of these when they look worse than the “old” ones … 💭🤦♂️
Leroy Merlin sells a 15cm white ceramic pot for €3.99: https://www.leroymerlin.pt/produtos/jardim/hortas-e-vasos/vasos/vasos-de-ceramica/vaso-pixel-15cm-branco-005-82442677.html
60% saving and better looking pot. No-brainer.
Added 7 to the shopping cart 🛒 and postage is €7.90 …
I know I will be using more pots for an up-coming shelf project … so tried increasing the number in cart …
until 10 units the shipping is fixed at €7.90
But if ordering 11 units shipping cost jumps to €34:
derp. So ordering 10.
The “pixel” pots arrived. Only 8, not the 10 I ordered. 🙃 @iteles please make sure we weren’t charged for 10… 💶
The pots are attractive, we all agree the design is good. 👍 But no dimension on them is 15cm… 🤷♂️ Base: 10.6cm:
Top diameter: 13.3cm
Height: 12.7cm
Comparison next to the IKEA pot:
This significant deviation from the specification means I need to re-do all the pencil markings I’ve made on the shelves. I didn’t cut them last week because I had a feeling they wouldn’t be the quoted 15cm …
going to take a couple of minutes to post a review on Leroy. ⏳
The Leroy App doesn’t allow people to add reviews. 🤦♂️
We paid€48.80. For some reason we didnt use any of our vouchers either.
I'll chase the refund next week.
I really want this the Drinking Glass Shelves and System to exist so I'm resuming this mini-project now. 🚧 Going to need to re-do the circles on the shelves that I drew the last week:
Need to make a new template with the correct diameter. ⌛
It's difficult to accurately measure the diameter in the mid-section of the pot/vase,
so I'm using a little math to calculate it.
Recall the Base diameter is 106mm
and the Top diameter is 133mm
add them together and half to get the approximate diameter of the middle:
(106 + 133) / 2 = 119.5
So I'm going to create a template with 119mm
and test it. ⚡
BRB. ⏳
cutting the test on laser:
With the 119mm diameter the pot/vase “sticks out” way too much:
Going to increase th diameter to 125mm … yes, this is trial and improvement now … 😜
Shaving 6mm of the diameter using the laser:
Shaving of another 3mm off the diameter:
this feels like the mid-point:
I think this will look amazing, super excited for it
Shelves are ready for installation:
Mounted the first one:
@iteles please test. (I think they are more than strong enough for our needs. 3 x 50kg screws + plugs)
Given the offset, I’m probably going to need to make another shelf … there are currently 7. I’m thinking of making 2 more and making one a child-accessible fruit basket. 🍎 🍌 🍐 (I’m aware that this may lead to waste, but children need to learn, and adults need to trust them and help them learn…)
Made the extra shelf this morning and have mounted 6 so far:
Today after nap time I will drill the final 3 holes and mount the last two shelves (T2m).
@iteles if you want to unbox the remaining pots with 👶 and insert them into the shelves:
We can clean up and have this finished today. 🤞🏼
Supervisor instructing on where to mount the final shelf:
And helping to hammer in the plug:
All 8 shelves mounted:
All 8 pots/vases placed ready to receive the herbs 🪴
QA / strength testing:
Height/reach check:
@iteles over to you to order/buy the herbs. 🛒👌
@iteles want to visit Viveiro do Este +351 253 690 022 This evening after nap time to see if we can collect the herbs? 🪴
With herbs 🪴
Looks amazing! I hope D Teresa enjoys putting away the glasses stacking the in single file😜
It’s so much faster to take glasses out of the dishwasher and place them straight on the shelf; simply no contest. A basic Time & Motion Study: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_and_motion_study It used to take 5 mins for DT to empty 12 glasses from the dishwasher and place them in the above head height cupboard. It now takes 2 mins per dishwasher load. That’s a saving of 3 mins per load. If we have 20 people in the house and there are 6 dishwasher loads per day, that’s 18 mins (saved). 18mins x €8/h = 18/60x8=€2.40/day €2.40 x 365 days = €876/year Seems like a smart investment to make+mount a few shelves. 😉
It's actually worth it just to have the green in the kitchen. It's so PLEASANT and calming 😍
@Stephanymtr + @LuchoTurtle your feedback very much appreciated. 🙏 What would you do differently? 💭
We still need to buy ~30 more glasses to fully populate the shelf, but not in a rush as there is still a lot of other stuff to do before we have more people @home 💭
Looks good to me.
In fact, given the space constraint you have going on, I don't think any pull-out shelf system would be adequate, as it would block the entrance of the door.
The only thing that I think should be "better" is the safety bar. I think it's too tiny. A bump and off the glasses they go. I'd make it slightly bigger with a hinge and a lock or latch with a folding mechanism, like so.
This is cool two-fold because:
@nelsonic Super duper cool is my oficial feedback! 🆒 It's just missing a chair there, so I can sit and enjoy the herbs scent 😆 I agree with @LuchoTurtle! Raising the edges could prevent future accidents.
@LuchoTurtle totally take your point & thanks for the feedback. 🙏
In general the lower shelves have a lot more space and thus the glasses are quite recessed from the edge of the shelf:
This limits the chance that someone walking past will brush agains the glasses and accidentally knock them off the shelf.
But the first time someone somehow manages to knock off a glass I’m very happy to revisit the height of the barriers ... 👌
This morning we added compost to the pots containing the herbs and then watered them: 💧
Not expecting the herbs to last forever. But with some nutritious compost and water, they should last a few weeks. 🤞🏼
@iteles please keep an eye on the herbs and if any are tired, please water them or replace. 👌
We might need a separate issue on keeping the herbs alive. I think 👦 overwatered them when they went in and they perished pretty quickly apart from the mint which seems to be doing fine.
Mint is generally a thirsty herb, so would have loved 👦 for ‘overwatering ‘ them.

Sadly, the over-watered herbs didn't last long. 😢 Being away at Xmas didn't help ... We have since bought the odd potted herb and added to the shelves but again, they don't last long because of drainage.
As noted in https://github.com/dwyl/home/issues/113 we need a house plant system. Meanwhile ... @iteles what are your thoughts on putting a few low-maintenance plants (e.g: succulents) in the upper shelves? just to have something green there ...
Love the idea of succulents 👌
I think we could try two vases of coriander by the window side because we really do use those ALL the time, but need to look up how to have better drainage in closed pots.
Weather is rubbish this week so shall we bundle up the kids to a garden centre tomorrow after work for this?
Very happy to visit the Garden Center ASAP for this. 👌 🪴
Might be a good Saturday trip
We all went to the plant nursery/store this evening after work and collected a few low maintenance plants: 🪴
going to put them in pots in the kitchen when we get home. 👌🤞🏼
At present our drinking glasses 🚰 are stored in a hidden cupboard near the hob.
The distance from the dishwasher is
3.4m
and the height of cupboard is1.54m
(154cm). Our cleaning lady is1.49m
tall. When emptying the drinking glasses from the dishwasher, she takes what feels like a thousand short/shuffle steps between the washer and cupboard and then slowly climbs the step stool and puts away each glass one by one. ⏳ It’s excruciating to watch. 😢 the worst part isn’t even the glacial pace, it’s the fact that glasses are double-stacked:So they often end up breaking! 💔
It’s not her fault. It’s a bad system. I want to fix it. 💭
