"dot app" (.app) TLDs #466

Thanks to @Jbarget for pointing out what's going on with .app TLDs 🕸

https://developers.googleblog.com/2018/05/introducing-app-more-secure-home-for.html

These will be available from Domain Registrars ®️ from 8th May, but we can pre-book now for free at our preferred provider iwantmyname (the pre-reg is free, but the costs of the domains won't be up until 48hrs before 8th May).

So, do we want to secure .app domains for all dwyl properties?

And what about proactively suggesting it to our clients?

Please add your thoughts and I'll turn them into actions (it's only a P1 because there's only 5 more days to pre-order)

Yeah, saw the announcement yesterday ... image

It's tempting, but it's probably going to be a "premium" domain (which means another $30 of "rent" per year) with not much value/benefit ... given that we have the Trademark, we can easily complain to Google/ICANN if anyone else tries to use dwyl.app ... If anything we should invest the money in securing a Worldwide Trademark for "dwyl".

Discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16967865 Basically some people are concerned that Google can "shut down" your .app for not complying with their Terms of Services ... Not that I think dwyl would ever have any issues "complying" ... 🤔

If there is a demonstrable SEO benefit from using an .app domain I could be persuaded.

JFC why does it all have to be so fiddly - I'm now reading pages and pages of ICANN docs which look like they were laid out in the 90s using MS Works

I've reserved one for Killer just because why not, but you're right it would be good to see if there is any intrinsic benefit to it - whether SEO or consumer trust
