We have an area 10 x 5 m that we need to compact comprehensively before laying down a concrete floor.

this looks like a good option from a reputable equipment rental co. Don’t feel the need to research any further.

There are a few options on OLX: https://www.olx.pt/ads/q-compactadora/

If we are going to be doing any kind of concrete slab work in the future, it makes sense to buy our own compactor E.g: https://www.olx.pt/d/anuncio/placa-vibratoria-a-gasolina-6-5cv-IDIdxAQ.html

image

@iteles what are your thoughts? πŸ’ IMO if we buy a good second-hand unit and use it for the slabs in the secret garden it will pay for itself in terms of the time that we will have to waste going to-and-from the equipment rental place. ⏳

nelsonic commented 4 months ago

@iteles any luck following up with the chap selling the compactor on OLX? πŸ’ ⬆️ (iSent you my OLX login details in an encrypted message, so you can access my convo with him)

But if not, we could consider buying a new one, e.g: https://ferramentas.pt/maquinas-acessorios/maquinas-a-gasolina-gasoleo/placas-compactadoras?

Obviously I would prefer to pay less. But if we buy a new machine we get a Warranty and technical support. Which is probably worth the extra €50 ...

Alternatively we could send the link to this €499 compactor to the OLX seller as a bargaining chip for a discount e.g. down to €400 ... but quite honestly, I'm happy to just buy the new one and get it delivered to us instead of having to waste time going to collect the second-hand one. πŸ’ Second-hand is good for the environment. But if anything goes wrong with it ... how do we get spare parts? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Thoughts?
I feel like I've already wasted €50 worth of my time thinking about this tool πŸ’ and should just order the new one for the peace-of-mind. βœ…

I mean... how far is this equipment rental place that we would spend time going to and from?

It's T10m each way plus loading/offloading time so T30m (conservatively). βŒ› Plus the "admin" time to setup the account πŸ“ and then each time we have to rent it we have to reserve and collect it. There will be a minimum of 4 slabs (probably 5 in total). If we have to go there in the morning to collect it and return it after the day's use, it's T1h each time. or T5h (i.e. just short of a full working day) We both know that if it's M doing the collection drop-off (we'd have to give him the company debit card to pay ...) there's no universe in which it would take T15m to drive there; He'll make personal calls (stops) along the way and blame "traffic" for it taking T35m ...

Please feel free to fill-in the form to request reservation for this Friday: https://www.akiloc.com/reservations/aluguer-placa-compactadora-a-gasolina-60-70-kgs image

M can collect in the morning, delegate use to T during the day and M returns on his way home in the evening. If this trial works and it "only" costs us €26/day plus some setup time and €20 of Miguel's time it could work out a fair amount cheaper than buying. 🀞

I'm thinking ahead for when Landim want to extend their kitchen working area (concrete slab) and build a Gazebo with solar panels on the earth.google.com/web/search/41.3779991,-8.4634071 landim-solar-panel-location

But if we're just focussed on the current project, renting its better. πŸ‘Œ

This Friday was always going to be unlikely - not only is it the day that the Workawayers don't actually work but also I didn't see this message until just now, sorry. Should I try for Monday?

nelsonic commented 4 months ago

iWill be back on Monday and make the call to the rental place. iCan swing by there after work. Opening hours from their website are: image

Will need to take M with me in the van so they know him and he can go collect it in the future. But if you want to send the inquiry form linked above just to confirm they have the one we want in-stock that will be helpful. I will follow-up with a call on Monday to confirm. πŸ‘Œ Thanks! πŸ™

Called the compactadora people:

nelsonic commented 4 months ago

Do we (you or I) need to go there in-person to setup the account and pay the deposit?

iteles commented 4 months ago

I don't imagine so. I'll ask. But ideally do we want it for tomorrow or for the next day?

nelsonic commented 4 months ago

ASAP. ⏳ πŸ’Έ πŸ”₯

iteles commented 3 months ago

We hired this for 2 days at €38 in the end and used it.

I put the deposit hold on my personal AB credit card.

@nelsonic Any feedback in order to close this issue for now?

nelsonic commented 3 months ago

@iteles we will be better prepared for it next time and only collect it when the site is 100% ready for compacting. I optimistically thought we could get the ground ready for compacting in a couple of hours, it ended up taking the whole day (because people weren't focussed and took long breaks... ⏳) Next time we get everything ready before reserving/collecting the compactor. Leaving the issue open for now as we will be re-using it in the near future. πŸ‘Œ Thanks @iteles πŸ™
