@eliascodes thanks very much for summarising your thoughts! We agree with your "Russian dolls" analogy (DS > ML > AI) and that there is a "progression". Our purpose of having the 3 separate repos is as different "entry points". But if we focus on DS initially it's more practical to our NGO clients.
So far we have discussed using DS to derive insights from data with 3 of our clients. But we have not had the capacity to put a proposal together.
With regards to learning resources, we agree with "filling in the gaps". Our objective is to give people a way to "get started" with DS in a day. We need to advise people where they should start their DS learning learning ideally not a 12 week course but something people can get to grips with in a few hours.
We completely agree with crafting a Data Ethics Policy (compliant with all applicable laws/regulations). At present the @dwyl Manifesto mentions data: manifesto.md#your-data-is-yours but we can definitely be a lot clearer. (please open an issue and go for it!)
Agree that "deep learning" is not applicable to the types/volumes of data that most of our clients have; initially our objective is simply to help our client(s) collate & analyse the data they have and act on any insights we help them derive.
First Steps look good. 👍
Your objective/interest matches ours. ✅
Next Steps:
Hey @iteles @nelsonic
These are just some initial thoughts. Not sure where I should be putting this, but thought I’d stick it up for you to have a look at. Let me know if you want to have this conversation somewhere else.
Questions:
learn-data-science
,learn-machine-learning
,learn-artificial-intelligence
)? From my perspective, they are Russian dolls (i.e. data-science < machine-learning < artificial intelligence). It would be useful to have one place to organise higher level strategic thoughts; it’s not clear to me where that is at the moment. I guess I would default to using thelearn-data-science
repo for that, but open to suggestions.Comments:
First Steps:
The technical demonstrations step could go on indefinitely; that’s the point at which understanding the strategic vision will help me/us.
My Objectives & Interests:
For the record, I think at the moment my objective can be loosely encompassed by “to help bring machine learning and data science into the commons”. Won’t elaborate further here.
In terms of areas of interest, here’s a short list, in no particular order:
