How does this bear up as a grass substitute for lawn? Some plant become slimy and slippery when you walk on them. Sadly, I can’t ask her now, but Flos had ripped up her lawn grass and planted something that could take the walking without being wrecked.

Hi @carolrmc, Yeah, a real shame we can't ask Flos ... 😒

My main issues with traditional grass are:

  1. maintenance & mowing (wastes time and money)
  2. hardiness in high-traffic areas (patches where grass is worn down to soil)
  3. water use (not as much of an issue in Braga where we have abundant water, but worth remembering for most places..._)

Ruschia lineolata is not a type of grass, rather it's a succulent https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruschia

https://www.thegardener.co.za/the-gardener/cc/ruschia-lineolata/

"The Ruschia lineolata is a tough succulent is a versatile ground cover which produces masses of pretty striped pink to cerise and white flowers. By tough we mean you can drive over it with a car without too much damage to the plant. It is easily propagated from cuttings that knit together to form a neat carpet. It loves sun and grows in just about any soil."

This video describes Ruschia lineolata as "drought tolerant, pet friendly, super hardy and low maintenance": https://youtu.be/omT9k643oBw image

I think it would work quite well on the left-hand side of the entrance as it won't be walked on very much and has good border already. πŸ’

Perfect! Also a good spot to test it for use in high traffic areas!

@iteles could we place an order for a tray of these for delivery next month or ask the gardener/garden-centre owner if he has any we can buy?

The idea would be to plant it in the front garden as low maintenance lawn replacement.
