I think that has been a moral dilemma for thinking people through the centuries! Was it fair to domesticate any animal in that case? I donโt know where the fine line is between it being morally acceptable and not. I have this dilemma about the cat - she should be an out door cat, thatโs her inheritance, but could she survive traffic, dogs, other cats now?

The question is: is it fair to remove a bird from the wild just so we (humans) can have an animal companion that "talks"?

The Cat @carolrmc is referring to is Nala
๐
who was "rescued" from the street where she faced an "uncertain" future. ๐ค
I've often thought ("wrestled") with the thought: should we have left Nala to "fate" as a "Street Cat" (where she would probably have died but might have survived but would have to contend with stray dogs, fast-moving cars and an "insecure" food source; i.e. scavenging scraps and hunting!) OR does she have a "better life" as a "domesticated" Cat where she has food, shelter and play [with humans] and no "existential threat" of any kind. i.e. this is a "(potential) death vs. imprisonment" dilemma.
What would I want for myself in her position...? When we found her she was a defenceless "newborn" who could barely open her eyes or walk. She did not ask to be "saved" (although she was crying quite loudly when we discovered her!) Should we have reared her to the age where should could fend for herself, given her all the vaccinations and then left her where we found her to live as an "street cat"...? OR would the fact that we fed her and potty-trained her have meant she would not survive on the street...?
Back to the subject of this issue ...
Parrots are generally not "breed in captivity"; they are captured from the wild. ๐
I would never buy a Parrot from a "Pet Shop". (it would obviously have been "captured") and would obviously never even think of keeping a Parrot in a Cage! (that would be the definition of cruelty ...)
I should have clarified (above) that:
I would either get a Parrot form "rescue" e.g: https://www.fosterparrots.com or place an advert online with the following: "Do you have a Pet Parrot but live in an Apartment...? Want the bird to be happy? We can help!"
i.e. I would "buy" someone else
's Pet Parrot and give it a much better life! https://github.com/dwyl/home/issues/14
This Amazonian Parrot [Autumnalis] is clearly not flying outside or nesting in a tree! https://www.custojusto.pt/aveiro/animais-domesticos/papagaio-amazona-autumnalis-salvini-27027017 If I could pay the current owner (captor) to let me have it I would give it an amazing place to live!

An "MVP" ("low risk" but effective test) of this idea could be to rescue
(buy) a Lovebird which is currently being kept indoors - or caged - from a non-professional owner and give it a "new
life" in the "Home" garden which has many trees and plants for it to explore and enjoy!

Lovebirds [Agapornis] is a type
of Parrot it just does not talk or do "tricks".
It would be a good "test" of whether we (me and the other "Home" residents)
like having a bird and take care of it. Without spending โฌ500+ on a "real" Parrot.

I would be careful of having birds in a place you are welcoming paying guests. Many people have feather fobias - they hate moving wings, or feathers or birds in general just give them the creeps!

@carolrmc yes, thanks for reminding us that some people are Ornithophobic ... ๐
But let's think about this for a second ... are we going to: a) cater to all the Phobias https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_phobias and avoid living our lives ๐ or b) build an awesome bird-friendly garden with many feeders, nesting boxes and water sources so that the Ornothologists can enjoy the space and bird-curious people can discover/learn. ๐
Yes, we should be "sensitive" to people's fears, (however irrational they may be!) but if we were catering to Agoraphobic or Aquaphobic people we would have no windows and no fish pond either! ๐
I'm not saying we must have tropical birds. ๐ฆ But I am 100% going to encourage local birds to nest in the garden ๐ณ because I find birdsong to be one of the most relaxing sounds in the world. ๐ถ ๐
I firmly believe that you can garden to encourage birds to visit and even nest in your garden, but then you canโt keep a cat! And I do agree there is no sound quite as relaxing as birdsong. (Also the sound one should pipe through learning rooms, since it increases brain activity )

@carolrmc it's like you're "reading our mind"... ๐ We are going to have built-in/hidden speakers in the learning room which will be used for both multimedia e.g: Video Conferences or Watching Online Lectures and piping in calming music (all controlled within the "home app")
As for "canโt keep a cat" I respectfully refute that claim; all feeders/nests will be high enough and without cat accessible "ladders" to allow birds to nest/feed without risk of a domestic cat "catching" them.
This will require additional research and design to ensure we get the correct height. help wanted
!
How will you keep away the pesky pigeons?

There aren't a lot of pigeons in Braga. (thankfully) But also, there isn't a reason to keep them away unless they are genuinely being a pest!
(if pigeons become a nuisance, we have still have a couple of BB Guns with Bio-Degradeable Pellets ... from when we had a Roof Garden in London, they don't injure/kill the birds, simply scare them off...)
Pigeons tend to chase other birds away, and B.B. guns scare all birds indiscriminately, they donโt target only pigeons!

@carolrmc are you suggesting that I don't have "good aim"...? You appear to be forgetting how much I practiced in my youth ... I can hit a fly in motion from 2m or a 50cent coin from 10m. Pigeons were not a problem in our LDN Roof Garden, trust me. Please avoid being "pre-occupied" by something that won't be any cause for concern. Focus on the subject/topic of the issue: Parrots!!
