Sound! #5

Open nelsonic opened 9 years ago

nelsonic commented 9 years ago

Do we need to invest in microphones? @markwilliamfirth

ghost commented 9 years ago

Yes! Sound is half of the video!

The Zoom h1-h6 are meant to be good (for a general microphone).

It depends on your exact use. If you're making YouTube videos, you could buy a zoom with a shotgun mic extension, as a shotgun mic is most appropriate for this.

nelsonic commented 9 years ago

Wow... should we record the sound separately from the video and then mix it in?

nelsonic commented 9 years ago

The H1 sounds "good enough"... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvTl7Cmqcx8

nelsonic commented 9 years ago

For "interviews" would it make sense to have a Lavalier Mic? e.g: the following setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIh2U-v6jcs

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rode-SmartLav-Plus-Lavalier-smartphones/dp/B00MWECOLK ?

Recording audio using a separate device is standard in film-making and for those creating professional YouTube videos. You will sometimes see YouTubers clap at the beginning of their videos, this is to aid in syncing the audio file with the video later on (and is the same as using a clapper as they do for movies).

Yes the H1 is a good mic. The H6 is the newest version and has 6 inputs. This means you can record more audio streams at once. For example, if you have an interview with a host and a guest, that might require 2 wireless lavs and a standard mic/shotgun/boom to use as backup in case the subject moves and the lav picks up some rustling from clothing etc.

Lavs are often standard for interviews, but you can use a boom or other types of mics as well.

With a lot of these questions in dwyl/video/issues it is very hard to answer because it depends on your exact use case and budget. It would be the same as me telling you, "I want to make an app, what is the best database?" Obviously the answer depends on what kind of app you want to make and what you value more (speed, etc). The same applies when it comes to these video questions.

nelsonic commented 9 years ago

The "Best Database" ... Redis. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: The exact use-case(s) are the following:

We expect to be doing all of the above in the next 12 months... and the budget is: "use your imagination" while maintaining "value for money".

I think it would be super-useful if we could do an initial video session testing exactly what we need to buy.

The Rode VideoMic Pro is a popular choice http://www.rode.com/microphones/videomicpro

Wow... talk about getting distracted by the day-to-day work of a small business ... Opened this issue 15 months ago and made zero progress since then. 😒 Even though I'm finally free from my main "day job" with "TC" I'm still not swimming in time to work on video production for the next few weeks (months?) ... However I want to reiterate that producing Video content is a High Priority for both me and DWYL because I know that many people don't learn well with text-based tutorials and video is a much better way to communicate with humans!

@sohilpandya is using a Rode Videomicpro for his YouTube videos so I might "shadow" him to learn how to use it when he has time for an apprentice. πŸ˜‰

Got one of these on sale for "Cyber Monday": https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005CQ2ZY6 zoom-h2n-sound-recorder

@nelsonic fyi I just bought a RVMP today so now there are two floating around!

nelsonic commented 7 years ago

@markwilliamfirth sweet! 🍭 we need to story-board sometime soon... πŸ‘

sohilpandya commented 7 years ago

Just to add I have also got a Rode Lav for iPhone, which I had bought a long time ago. Back when I had an iPhone 5s. Never thought of the day headphone jacks would be redundant on an iPhone! 😭 Although it does work with the new iPhones! (with the help of a dongle) πŸ’›

@sohilpandya cool would love to sound-test it in Jan. πŸ˜‰ What App did you use to record?

sohilpandya commented 7 years ago

@nelsonic it was the RØDE Reporter app, previously used the RØDE Rec app. :)

nelsonic commented 7 years ago

@sohilpandya you've used the Zoom H2n for few videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheSocialPandas how do you rate it? πŸ€”

P.S. I've ordered a "Blue Yeti" Mic to leave in the office/studio (because reviews were good see: https://www.engadget.com/2017/02/03/the-best-usb-microphone/ ...) πŸ˜‰

sohilpandya commented 7 years ago

I really like it! Works really well and it's portable so that's good ☺

I'm planning to spend some time to clear out the shower room and start getting it ready so that we can use it as a studio.

Worth getting a pop filter as well for the blue yeti?

nelsonic commented 7 years ago

@sohilpandya also ordered this stand with pop filter: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Microphone-Ouonline-Professional-360%C2%B0Adjustable-Suspension/dp/B01FV5NK1Y/ microphone stand
