Microsoft Teams (๐คฎ) slowing down even the most recent high-end intel macs is a known issue: https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/40410775-please-fix-desktop-app-performance-on-macos-cons in some cases having teams on slows down my "main" MacBook Pro with to unusably slow. ๐ข ๐ Cannot wait to see the back of "Teams"; it's garbage!
Wow ... this is a lot worse than I thought. It's like it gets worse each time I use Teams.
Teams is using 55% of my CPU, a 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
...
It's spinning wheels in the other Apps ...
I know I said above I would "wait and see" ... but this is really bugging me. Teams is a horrible App.

I'm pretty much sold on getting the next Apple Silicon Chip in whatever form it gets sold in. ๐ญ ๐ธ
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/release/20210819-02 The edit rendering performance is up to 3x faster and exports are 65% faster. This is game-changing.
This week Apple announced the M1 Pro & Max in the new Mac Laptops: https://www.apple.com/uk/mac/

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/14-inch
https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/16-inch
The margin on these laptops is insane! But for someone who uses it as a tool for their job ...

Really wish I could justify spending this kind of money ... ๐ญ
Going to wait for Apple to either release an update to the Mac Mini because my recent experience with Mac Screen repair has been painful and with the new "notch" screens I suspect that will only get much worse!

M1 13โinch MacBook Pro (2020) with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353709663514
This looks like a really good take-anywhere Mac Laptop with M1 so I could use it for Video editing. Maxed RAM (for this model) and 1TB is good for storing a decent amount of video content while editing ...
This model as spec'd sells for ยฃ1899 on Apple's website today: https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/13-inch-space-grey-apple-m1-chip-with-8-core-cpu-and-8-core-gpu-512gb#
This Pro has the TouchBar which is good in certain situations but not others ... Now that Apple have removed it from the higher-end models, some 3rd party software might not have great support for it ... ๐ญ But given that TouchBar has been around since 2016 in the Pro models, it's fair to say that any Apps that were going to support it already do ... and the "fallback" to standard function keys is fine.
Ordered a Mac Mini M1 to use as my "Work" machine. Going to connect it to the Camera for Teams, etc.
16GB
RAM and 512GB
SSD. This will be more than enough for my needs for the next couple of years.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Apple-Mac-mini-512GB-SSD-M1-16GB-Silver-A2348-April-2020-/324939718425
For reference this machine currently costs ยฃ1,099
from Apple:
https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/mac-mini/apple-m1-chip-with-8-core-cpu-and-8-core-gpu-512gb#
So I think ยฃ755 is a decent discount. ๐
I think it's going to be a beast compared to my 2014 i7 Mac Mini or my 2015 i7 MacBook Pro ...
I will still use my MacBook Pro for writing Elixir
code which runs perfectly well.
But anything Work involving Video (MS Teams!!!!!!) will be on the M1 on the "clean" desk.
I've been using the Mac Mini M1 for work for the past few days. Haven't heard the fan once. Bliss. ๐
But now have to download 12 GB
of OS update ... ๐
MS Teams ... bane of my existence. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
Updated to MacOS Monterey. No issues so far with the Apps I use. MS Teams is working. Zero Fan Noise (so far ...). ๐
Haven't had time to edit any video yet ... โณ But so far I've been able to use MS Teams, Slack, Chrome, VS Code, etc. concurrently without any slow-down. So it's already been a major improvement over my 2015 Mac. Closing this issue.
Both Zoom and MS Teams have not been optimised for Apple Silicon ... Yesterday I had this when trying to join our Zoom call:
@iteles have you had an issues running Zoom lately?
โ ๏ธ Warning: First World Problems โ ๏ธ
This issue contains First World Problems that may be upsetting to some people; viewer discretion is advised.
Preliminary Conclusion: Wait for New Silicon
I'm opening this issue so that I can stop thinking about it.
Context ๐ญ
We've been using the MacBook Pro for video capture and editing. It's been mostly fine. The issue I have is that when screen recording in Zoom/Teams/QuickTime it overheats and the fans come on almost instantly (like 30 seconds in!). And once the fan starts it doesn't stop until we completely shut down the machine.
I can't help wonder if there could be a significant UX/performance benefit from an M1 Mac Mini ... ๐ญ
Though the M1 still doesn't have support for all the dev tools some people use ... It doesn't concern me. I wouldn't be using it for Dev work.
Then there is the YT rumour mill that Apple will be updating to
M1X
"soon" ...Right now I don't have that much time to do video editing, but I've been capturing lots of video; terabytes of it! Going to suck it up and deal with the overheating and fan noise for the next couple of months. (i.e. wait patiently for the next Apple announcements and then go for it) As much as I want to get an M1 Mac Mini and not think about this, I know I will probably "regret" spending $900 on an M1 Mac Mini and then have the M2 or M1X with more cores and better external storage support in 2 months time ...
