Glass Bottle Cutter #158

Open nelsonic opened 3 months ago

nelsonic commented 3 months ago

We have access to an untapped resource: unlimited glass (wine) bottles. šŸ·

All we have to do is collect them from the venue where they get consumed. We'd be saving them the trip to the recycling centre.

So I'm considering building a wall featuring glass bottles. šŸ’

But to make them useful as habitat for birds & insects, we need to cut them open at the base.

So ... we need a glass bottle cutter. āœ‚ļø

How do we make these safe so that the cut side isn't sharp? Do we need to somehow sand down the edges?

Edit: just saw the cutting and sanding machine link šŸ‘ŒšŸ»

nelsonic commented 3 months ago

@iteles indeed, sanding the cut/sharp edge is essential. šŸ‘Œ We already have a decent sanding setup in the workshop. However, given the ultra-fine dust thrown off by grinding glass, we would need to take it outside (and still wear a respirator and full overalls and mask). šŸ˜·

iteles commented 3 months ago

Which wall are you considering this for? šŸ˜Š

nelsonic commented 3 months ago

Initially, just a small one, but if it goes well, and we have access to essentially unlimited glass bottles - 20 weddings x 100 bottles = 2k bottles šŸ¤Æ We could build something epic! šŸ˜ but cutting & sanding 2k bottles would take weeksā€¦ ā³ So gotta start small. šŸ’

This is a dedicated ceramic (and glass) cutting saw with water (which traps the fine dust) as described in the previous video:

If it speeds up the cutting process and saves a few hours Iā€™m on board! šŸ’

Confirmed all bottles from the weekend's wedding were kept for us so they'll need to be picked up asap, preferably by Thursday afternoon, definitely before Friday when they're setting up the next one.

nelsonic commented 2 months ago

Hmm ... did they say how many bottles it is? (Should I be taking the Van? šŸšš)

nelsonic commented 2 months ago

@iteles could we axsk @LuchoTurtle to collect the bottles on Thursday on his way from Porto? šŸ’

iteles commented 2 months ago

They were Irish. I would suspect the van is a good call. My aunt didn't know because she wasn't there at the end of the night.

iteles commented 2 months ago

Sounds like a plan to ask @LuchoTurtle, he'll be in Sofia's car so should have some room šŸ˜†

nelsonic commented 1 month ago

Thanks @LuchoTurtle for bringing the bottles! ā¤ļø

The machines are all here sitting in the workshop waiting to be un-boxed ... šŸ“¦ As a child I never dreamed I would have "too many toys, not enough time" ... šŸ¦– ā³ It's totally different problem šŸ˜•
