Management of language files

A config file similar to plugins that maintains language files.

Given a number of git sources of repos that consist of .mo and .po files

• keep and update checkouts of the repos
• copy the .mo and .po files into the root of a new wp-content/languages/ on deployment
• if a hardcoded wp-content/languages/ with the same name is included in the app repo, then don't overwrite it

Interesting idea. Did you come across some situation where this would have made things easier?

Does anyone know if there currently exist git repos for language files?

Looks like we have language files in 4 repos.

These both use the git@git.dxw.net:wordpress-languages/en_GB submodule:

  • Uses wordpress en_US language file, and does these transforms: s/Howdy/Hello/g, s/Powered by WordPress/The Loop/g, s{http://wordpress.org/}{https://ict.justice.gov.uk/}g
  • buddypress plugin: changes friend to contact, adds a "u" to "favorite", changes "avatar" to "photo"
  • invite-anyone plugin: changes "friend" to "contact"
  • buddypress-sitewide-activity-widget plugin: adds a "u" to "favorite"
• git@git.dxw.net:tdcs/app

This seems like a sensible change, but as only two repos would benefit from it at the moment, probably something that we can leave until later.
