Have a friend visiting and looking for some general tips. Accommodation, restaurants, bars, things to do.

Downtown (where I live) is lé bomb [dot] com. There's lots of great restaurants and bars down here, and cool Airbnb's at which to crash. How long is your friend in town for? That'd probably dictate some of my advice (i.e. whether or not to do a night at the Standard, or an equally posh hotel about town). Foodwise, there's fantastic restaurants all over the city. Feel free to put your friend in touch with me directly too, I'm happy to point in the right direction.

Father's office in culver city is wonderful- great burger (among the best in LA) good beer selection on tap, an hard to find American whiskers am spirits.

Also, pie and burger. Good pie, good burger. It is what it is, and where it is, is Petaluma.

@ajsharp she will be in town with two friends for eight days. Not sure what their budget is, but I'll get more information from her.

My knowledge is mainly confined to Santa Monica / Culver City... but I too love Father's Office. Great beer and burgers. Also, Mendocino Farms for sandwiches (I go to the one in Marina Del Rey). Ask for the "Three Little Pigs." It's mind blowing. Disneyland is also pretty fun. They sell beer and what not, so you can just get bombed and relive your childhood.

restaurants: absolutely can't miss the Gorbals http://www.dynamic-ink.com/thegorbals/current-menu/ - make sure to sit at the kitchen counter and buy the chefs a round of beers ($10) and get the marrow bones. Sushi Go 55 - the oldest sushi restaurant in the US or something. They'll shave you fresh wasabi root, and the old chef there gets the best fish at the markets. There are a ton of new amazeballz places that opened up since I left last year though, particularly in silverlake/echo park area. @thedaniel or @escapist know all about those if your friend is a serious foodie.

drinks: My favorite date spot, Varnish, which is a speakeasy-style bar through an unmarked door in the back of Cole's french dip sandwich place. Serious fuckin' cocktails, huge chunks of hand-chipped ice, all that good stuff. Next door is babycakes which is the best gluten-free/vegan cupcakes. Coffee, you have to visit intelligentsia in silverlake (or venice) just because hipsters.

Yep, Baco is amazing. Great suggestions on this thread. We should all go grab beers and burger sometime...

Baco Mercat is a must. Get the house Baco. And be sure it rhymes with "taco" when you pronounce it, or you suck. I prefer this place for lunch — dinner can be a long wait for a fancy breadtaco.

The Gorbals is great, but the menu's a bit small and a little exotic, so the adventurous will fare better.

Pattern Bar is the best kept secret in DTLA. If every place else has a shitty crowd and a huge wait, Pattern Bar is usually still workable.

Intelligentsia serves super high quality coffee in hip-as-shit locations. The one in Pasadena is huge and has really nice beer and wine as well (and free wifi). Handsome Roasters is holier-than-thou to the point that they don't allow sweeteners of any type. I'd like to burn them to the ground.

Los Angeles has a "burger belt" with no shortage of unbelievable (and expensive) burgers. As with the above paragraph, I'm comfortable recommending the more obvious option rather than the new hotness. In this case: Go to Umami Burger and eat an Umami burger. There are locations in Hollywood, Los Feliz, Pasadena, and Downtown (Los Feliz is the best).

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll pass them on and hopefully they'll get put to good use. Also I guess I need to visit LA now with a list like this.

Yea... I can't believe I forgot umami. Tell them to order the cheesy tots there. They're great.

IMO stout in Hollywood gives umami a run for best burger in la. They also have a killer beer selection.

Griffith Park in general is awesome. Griffith Observatory in particular is #amazeballs. Both the grounds and the museum inside. Go to it.

Walking down Hollywood Blvd to see all the stars, wax museum, Chinese Theatre and the costumed folks, is worth doing once.

Food. I love food. I especially love putting food in my mouth hole. LA is the best city I've (as a vegan) ever eaten. Here's some of my favorite that also perform well for muggles.
