Star Trek WordPress theme #1

Budget: $150 Timeline: 2 days Difficulty; EASY

Current website: www.tfd.nl Current theme: Coral Dark - found here

Description: Needs a revamp - I suggested parrallax and large graphics. They are fine with generic Star Trek graphics.

Path of least resistance: Find a great free parrallax theme, make it black, add some Star Trek graphics and some color accents. Easy. Done.

User: marcghysels (Use the branch I created for this user) I decided it would be easiest to branch by username so that drastically different projects never overlap and are easy to find.

I'm happy to help with graphics, find a good theme, make headers, tweak CSS as needed. Let me know how you would like to best approach this. Of course check everything into the repo and we can work together pretty easily from there.

@dynamictechco A few questions:

Revamp or Redo?

It's easier to just tweak their current Wordpress Theme. People get attached to their own theme, and iteratively refining their theme will achieve the best result in terms of aligning actual work to actual requirements. Throwing them a brand new theme will risk them rejecting our suggestions.

If they want a completely new theme, the safest thing to do is just to tweak their original Coral Dark theme. Not difficult to add:

Content Transfer?

No need to do any content transfer? Or is that a later phase of the project?

Suggested approach

The Background

Some ships: USS Ballard, USS Enterprise, USS Franklin, and so on.

Tweak existing Wordpress theme

Least resistance from customer and for us too. No need to transfer content to new theme.

The work will be done quickly, customer gets up and running fast.

Such rapid iterative development will encourage the customer to engage us further for numerous small tweaks way into the future.

We can definitely take this route, like I said the customer is aware I'll be working with their current theme if possible. I'll be working on graphics to send over to you, just focus on the functionality.

Current theme means really their current theme? Or the Coral Dark theme?

I asked them to send me their current theme, when they said they did not know how and told me what kind of theme it was - Coral Dark - I made the assumption they've made no customizations to it.

We should be able to modify the downloaded free version of Coral Dark and make a child theme from there just fine.

They've definitely made customizations to it. I looked into the HTML source on their website. This is very high risk, in case the customer says they expected their content to be popped into the new theme within 2 days.

Customer needs guidance, yours

That said, we should just relax and enhance the official Coral Dark theme.

Ship the theme to them, and let them transfer their content themselves. Frankly, for a 2-day job, it's impossible to do any content transfer. They'll understand. They themselves had spent a lot more than 2 days customizing their own current theme in use.

If you handle this correctly, this can mean a monthly revenue from them. Be honest, be competent (in your technical speak), and handhold them to their success.

Until repo is ready here are some backgrounds:

Star Trek Backgrounds

Parrallax usually means vivid clear backgrounds (less patterns), you can place headers, translucent divs, or other content over these or you can let them just be visual intros into the next section on the blog page.

My idea was to take five of these and use them as default visual headers for the first five posts on the front blog page with snippets leading a to a read more immediately following the header. Let me know if this makes sense.
