Fixtures json for Category standing data #130

So we don't have to add them each time syncdb is run.

What are the main Categories we need please Kim?

mattions commented 11 years ago

The category are associated with objects, so they should not be in initial_data.json but just in a categories.json.

Than we can load them once in the db, but we have them defined On Feb 10, 2013 12:23 PM, "jogwen" notifications@github.com wrote:

OK. First attempt. How about:

[All] Art Installations Special Events Talks Artists Cleantech Collaborators Venues Other

Putting each category in a should sort the formatting?

mattions commented 11 years ago

I don't think Venue makes sense as category.

Category can be assigned only to participant anyway! On Feb 10, 2013 12:51 PM, "Kim SJ" notifications@github.com wrote:

I thought the category field was to define the speciality of the participant eg. lighting, photovoltaics, sustainability, art...

Your list seems more like categories for Events ...?

I put "venue" as a category because I was thinking of "participants" such as Great St Mary's, Grand Arcade and John Lewis. Or maybe we put them only in the "Sponsors" or "Partners" page. Alessandra, do you have a view? Partners is currently buried in a tab on the "about" page. We could make it "Sponsors and Partners" or "Sponsors and supporters" at the top level. I think I favour that.

Yes, this is a side-effect of the change of emphasis from virtual exhibition to contributors.

This means another model change and screen refactor - these are categories for Events not Participants - consider the case where an artist, a venue owner and a cleantech company put on an art installation event together, and the cleantech also puts on a talk event with a different venue owner. If you put category 'Art Installation' on the cleantech company, then in the Events list screen, filtering by 'Art Installation' will show up the talk event. Also, each time you add a new event, you'd have to go and find all the participants involved and add the category of the new event to them. It just doesn't work properly.

If you want these categories then we'll need to add a category field to the Events table and a new EventCategory table, and alter the screens accordingly.

Do you still also want categories of Participants as well? If so then we'll end up with two filters on each screen, or preferably we move to having the Participant Category filter (lighting, energy, art, venue ...) to define what the participant is contributing on the participant/collaborator screen and the Event Category filter (talk, art installation, special event...) to define the type of event on the Events screen.

It's very late in the day for all these kinds of model changes. What's the timescale now? When is the data entry taking place? When is the site going live?

OK. Categories are firm now, so I can close this?
