Link on http://drupal.org/project/xc_installation page downloads 2 different packages. At the bottom of the page if clicked on "6.x-1.2" it goes to http://drupal.org/node/1545608. If clicked on "zip" then it downloads profile installation.

That is normal. The installation package creator script on Drupal.org creates 3 different package, and each compressed with both tar and zip, so there are 6 different downloadable package for each Drupal profile project (aka installation package) not just for XC. The 3 package are: 1) only the files inside this project (the install script, the profile, the make file etc.) 2) 1. + all required modules and themes 3) 2 + full Drupal.

Now there is a problem to fix: the script points to Drupal 6.22 instead of the current 6.26. 6.22 is outdated, and contains know security issues (which were fixed in later versions), that why the page's download section is in red (unrecommended). To fix this problem, please change the line "core = 6.22" to "core = 6.26" in drupal-org.make file, commit it, and create a new release.
