I would like to be really clear on how John should assemble his records in MAS and what the impact is from the 001, 003, and embed holdings work Bowen is writing. Then we should link to an online requirements doc.

What data elements are kept from the "source" record?
What elements are pulled from each match record?
How to make a match from 2 embedded holdings institutions?
How to make match from one embed institution and a non0embed institution.

I'll be very interested in hearing the answers to Randy's questions.  My understanding goes only this far:

1. Embedded holdings have no bearing on document matching (they are NOT matchpoints).

2. If pt. 1 is true, is it necessary to use embedded holding data as an additional keep field?

I think this really is Jennifer, and I think inclusion of handling the embedded holdings might be drop 3 deliverable, but I would like to have John review the impact/design of this during drop 2.

This is going to be an extra output of the Norm and Trans spec work I'm doing for embedded holdings but the short answer is that YES, the embedded holdings field (953) will need to be merged into the output record. That much IS already in the merged record spec version that I uploaded today:

Holdings Data Embedded in Bibliographic Records

If a library’s bibliographic records contain holdings data in specific fields and those fields are supported by the MARC Normalization Service (see the “Configure Holdings/Embedded MARC Holdings Data section of the MARC Normalization Service Configuration File), the Normalization Service will configure the embedded holdings into MARC 953 fields in its output. When the Aggregation Service encounters instances of these fields in a non-selected input record, they should be merged into the output record.

You're correct, John, that they have no bearing on the match process.

When norm starts producing 953's I'll have to make sure MAS aggregates them and places them at the end of the output record. That will be new work (its not done or in process yet)

From fb 1023: JBowen: 953: can you look to see if there is already a 953 in the output record and put the other 953 record with it? If there isn’t one, just stick it at the very end of the record.

But, the approach I will actually take (I believe) will be to strip 953's, then aggregate all of them, and dedup, and add them to the end of the record. This is style of approach for the other dynamic content.
