What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. none. always there

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
expected: ships
see: faint purple glow and no ships or buildings

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.051 - 64 bit windows 7

Please provide any additional information below.
modifications - turned off mesh highlighting, and adjusted brightness to .89.f 
before playing.
